“Sadder Than You’d Like” Where do I start to show you what it’s meant For me to know you after a life that read Like a laundry list with rags no cleaner to show for it? It’s me and who you always thought I’d been. Though amity is labor, These arteries and chambers Pump butane to torches carried. Bodies burning until they’re buried. You’ve been creeping in my head again lately. This love song is sadder than you’d like it to be. Caught dead in the same old formal secondhand clothes. From the wedding to the funeral. Joyriding the pine box. A seatbelt light blinks on and on and on.
2.
“Oh Yes (Hell Yes)” Word is you’re getting hitched. Tell me who’s truck and trailer? And will I miss you more later, In my existential fatigue? My fetishized and diving self-esteem? Or will I take it as a sign of the times? A manic pixie cut and dye. I only saw you as my piece of mind. But it was just the way you looked in the light. Barefoot, bare chest. One bent cigarette. Word is I’m better since the Sertraline. But there’s no redeeming sixteen. While I’m so scared to see you happy. And I don’t like what that says about me. Barefoot, bare breast. Two bent cigarettes. I saw you downtown a while back now and noticed you changed your hair. We’re such different people these days, a little more so ever year.
3.
“These Nails Didn’t Paint Themselves” I’ve been dwelling on stuff. I’ve been eating too much. I’ve been pulling nail from bed Just trying to placate the edge With a misanthropic polish appetite. We’re only wrong in hindsight. I haven’t left the house in quite a bit. But accountability finds me with Scared thigh and hip, Still fearing commitments. Inner elbows to palms. Breaking a habit of overstayed welcomes. Joyless and self absorbed. Would one good day be so much to ask for? Would you be angry if I called you drunk? Would you blame me if I gave up? Carrying my dead weight, mania, and malaise. Would you blame me if I gave up?

Good Grief 03:23
“Good Grief” Though we have little to celebrate, For now, surviver’s guilt gives way To fireworks and Fogerty. Why pretend it’s not an end to the world? We could dance to this until our sun unfurls. Good grief, good grief, another wreath of laurel. Do you think they’re gonna make it through? Doot do doo. Doot do doo. Do you think they’re even trying to? Doot do doo. Doot do doo. Boom. Are you my ghost? Some bittersweet ‘lifetime ago’ Coming ‘round to peek the denouement? Are you my ghost? Some bittersweet ‘lifetime ago’? Well, we find no catharsis in the rubble of the fall. On a summer night’s humidity The guilt is damp and lingering.

“Who The Rust Belt Left It’s Lashes On” It’s an open container. It’s a misdemeanor. It’s who has lost their charm And who the rust belt left it’s lashes on. Potholes and loose stone blemish any road home. Riding intentions never good enough to pave with, so we just don’t. And there’s no easy way to save this so maybe we just won’t. Caught in each other’s rear view trying to tint these mirrors rose. Texts on read and inebriates. It’s dirty work meeting these ends. Though tomorrow is another early day, I’m still up if you’re awake?
6.
“Only Dogs Go to Heaven” With no idea I was a ghost Until you called me out for haunting homes. Solicit meaning from superstition, While I stay both skeptic and apparition. Forgive the lake effect, Or just as well, the whole Midwest. A place for pruning. A place for growth. A place for you, you ought to have known. Pulled off to the shoulder, running my car for warmth. Pulled off past your shoulders, the thin white camisole. How many corners did you turn before you found me? I’ve been looking all my life to only end up rounding. A race to catch your tail lights at their leave. Out of sight, out of mind, out of body. Noel, Noel. The new year has been snowed out. As salt trucks crowd the road, If I can’t celebrate you home, Let December bury me in it’s drifts. What’s another Christmas passed our chapped lips?
